AUSTIN (KXAN) — A lot of tough, brawny Austin police officers were brought to tears Saturday by a sweet, 10-year-old girl from Tyler, Texas. With just two little words: “Thank You.”  The murders of two New York officers in December brought Savannah Solis to tears, and she’s been a girl on a mission ever since.

Savannah spent her Christmas break writing hundreds of thank you cards to police in New York and Texas. She delivered many in person, across East Texas, in Houston, Dallas — and now Austin. Her message was simple and straight from the heart.

“You are my heroes. I want to say: Don’t stop. Please don’t give up,” Savannah told the officers. “Many do not care or appreciate the sacrifices you make every day, but I do.”

“Many are standing with me today to let you know that you matter,” she went on to say. “Officers across Texas, you matter to me. Officers in New York City, you matter to me. Officers all across America, you matter to me. Please keep taking care of us.”

Her mom, Debbie Solis, says Savannah has wanted to be a police officer ever since she was “a little girl.”

“We would drive by and see them stopping somebody and in the backseat she would pray, asking God to take care of them,” Debbie recalled. Now, Debbie says Savannah is getting to meet her heroes.

“She wants to get as many autographs as possible because they are her heroes. She doesn’t look at celebrities like that, she does law enforcement. She adores them.”

The feeling is mutual. “I was so proud,” Austin Police Department Assistant Chief Jessica Robledo said. “The words she spoke from her heart touched every single officer. I noticed everyone was trying to blink back tears. That’s what it’s all about. She is an old soul. She knows the right thing to say, and I don’t think she even realizes the impact of her words to these officers and this department.”

She knows. “They always give me a hug. Or they say thank you and I say you’re welcome,” Savannah said, cradling the Austin police cap she was given Saturday.

A word of warning from APD, though. They say hands off Savannah; the department intends to recruit her in a few years.
